Encounters with Jesus: Unexpected Answers to Life's Biggest Questions

Encounters with Jesus: Unexpected Answers to Life's Biggest Questions

by TimothyKeller (Author)

Synopsis

What is my purpose in life? Who am I meant to be? How can I live a successful life? Why is there so much wrong with our world today? Am I part of the problem? What can I do to help change that? These are the big, seemingly unanswerable questions that everyone must ask and then answer in life. In Encounters With Jesus, New York Times-bestselling author and renowned pastor Timothy Keller explores Jesus' answers to life's biggest questions by showing what happened to those who met Jesus personally. Jesus changed the lives of nearly every person he met in the Gospels. These were powerful experiences that can have a profound effect on us today and help explain not only different aspects of Christianity, but the deep questions of life itself. Timothy Keller highlights ten of these encounters, including Jesus meeting a sceptical student, a religious insider, an outcast and even Satan himself, while proving how invaluable the lessons from these encounters are for contemporary readers.

Media Reviews
In this book, New York Times best-selling author and renowned pastor Timothy Keller explores Jesus' answers to life's biggest questions by showing what happened to those who met Jesus personally. Timothy Keller highlights ten of these encounters, including meeting even Satan himself, and proves how invaluable these encounters were. Pride I would highly recommend Encounters as a book to give to sceptics. Ordinarily, books of apologetics can be hard to digest, being packed with abstract logic and argument. Here these elements are powerfully in evidence, yet succinctly expressed. Also, because these apologetics arise out of 'real life' human story and interaction and because Christ is central to all observations made, Encounters is both fascinating and compelling in equal measure. -- Rev. David Barnes CLC World Tim Keller takes a fresh approach to apologetics, linking the big questions of life with particular encounters that Jesus had with individuals ... This book is of the calibre that we have come to expect from Keller. It addresses an old issue in a creative, imaginative and accessible manner. It helps us to reflect on the reasons for our faith, and would be [a] useful book to study in a small group or potentially use as a basis for a series of talks - **** -- LH Christianity Magazine I would highly recommend Encounters as a book to give to sceptics. David Barnes C&C World Mission Timothy Keller is an American Protestant publishing superstar. -- Rev. Andrew Davidson The Church Times It was a privilege to review his Walking with God through Pain and Suffering for the December 2013/January 2014 edition of Reform, so I was looking forward to reading this latest book. I was not disappointed. Encounters with Jesus Is full of wisdom and everyday language ... he has the skill and the knack of helping us to see where our thoughts and opinions don't make logical sense and don't lead us to truth ... and all of this is done with graciousness, humour and plenty of anecdotes... Encounters with Jesus would make a splendid present for someone who is beginning to work on the implications of following this Jesus. It is good theology at its most readable, its most comprehensible, its most enlightening. -- Ruth Allen Reform Magazine As is typical with Keller, it's full of helpful illustrations and quotes from philosophy, literature and media ... He lives up to his reputation as a skilled communicator ... Chapter 7 contains one of the most helpful explanations of the person and work of the Holy Spirit as our advocate that I have read anywhere. -- Spencer Shaw Evangelicals Now The writer brilliantly weaves the characters and storylines together ... I love this book, simple, straightforward but certainly not lightweight in content. It is a breath of fresh air, showing us the richness of encountering Jesus for ourselves. I would encourage anyone, Christian, seeker or sceptic, to read this book. I intend to give a copy to my doubting friend. -- John Hughes Reflections
