Physics for Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics

Physics for Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics

by Gene Mosca (Author), Gene Mosca (Author), Paul A. Tipler (Author)

Synopsis

Paul Tipler's Physics for Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics has set the standard in introductory physics courses for clarity, accuracy, and precision. The sixth edition offers a completely integrated text and media solution that will enable students to learn most effectively and professors to teach most efficiently. The text includes a new strategic problem-solving approach, an integrated Math Tutorial, and new tools to improve conceptual understanding. New 'Physics Spotlights' feature cutting-edge topics that help students relate what they are learning to real world technologies. This textbook is also available in three volumes: Volume 1: Mechanics/Oscillations and Waves/Thermodynamics (Ch 1-20, R) http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?PID=279798 Volume 2: Electricity and Magnetism/Light (Ch 21-33) http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?PID=279799 Volume 3: Elementary Modern Physics (Ch 34-41) http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?P ID=279800 NEW TO THIS EDITION * New Problem Solving Strategy: Examples follow a consistent "Picture, Solve, and Check" format to walk students through the steps involved in analyzing the problem, solving the problem, and then checking their answers; they include "Taking It Further" sections which present alternative ways of solving problems, interesting facts, or additional information regarding the concepts presented; and are followed by "Practice Problems" where appropriate. * New Integrated Math Tutorial to review basic results of algebra, geometry, trigonomtry, and calculus and provide "Examples and Practice Problems" for students to check their understanding of mathematical concepts. * New Pedagogy to ensure conceptual understanding includes "Conceptual Examples", "Concept Checks", and "Pitfalls" statements. * New "Physics Spotlights" discuss current applications of physics and connect these applications to concepts described in chapters.

Author Bio
Paul Tipler began his teaching career at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, USA then moved to Oakland University in Michigan, USA as one of the original members of its physics department, playing a major role in developing the physics curriculum. At one time or another over the course of his career, he has taught nearly all of the physics courses. In addition to Physics for Scientists and Engineers, he is also the author of the widely used texts Modern Physics and College Physics.

Gene Mosca has taught a variety of students in the calculus based course at Emporia (KS) State, USA for two years, the University of South Dakota, USA for nine years and at Annapolis for twelve years. He recently retired from his teaching position at the U.S. Naval Academy, where, as coordinator of the core physics course, he instituted numerous enhancements to both the laboratory and classroom. Proclaimed by Paul Tipler as 'the best reviewer I ever had,' Mosca became co-author beginning with the fifth edition of this book.
