The Savage

The Savage

by David Almond (Author), David Almond (Author), Dave McKean (Illustrator)

Synopsis

Imagine you wrote a story and that story came true. This is exactly what happens to Blue Baker when he writes about a savage living alone in the woods near his home. After his dad's death, Blue finds comfort in dreaming of a wild kid who survives on a diet of berries and the occasional hapless passer-by. But when the savage pays a night-time visit to the local bully, boundaries become blurred and Blue begins to wonder where he ends and the savage begins. Part novel, part graphic novel, this moving story features striking art from the award-winning Dave McKean.

Media Reviews
This book grabs the reader from the first page. * Scotland on Sunday *
Remarkable story. * The Times *
This is an extremely touching and cleverly conceived story within a story of how wounds can gradually heal and sadness fade: it is excellently served by its design, layout and high production values. * The Irish Times *
Tough, gritty bullying story by a writer at the top of his form... also illustrated, graphic novel style by an artist at the top of his form. -- Chris Powling * Classic FM *
This powerful story has all Almond's usual hallmarks. It manages to be simultaneously unbridled powerful and tender. * The Herald *
A clever and spooky book, bringing the surreal to the real. * Darlington and Stockton Times *
This is an affecting tale of a young boy discovering his own inner strength * Juno *
A stunning and unusual prose and graphic novel hybrid, The Savage has a unique voice all of its own. Sometimes the words are the focus and sometimes the images take centre stage, and it's genuinely a joy to read. I've always felt that the best children's stories don't hide from a kind of darkness and honesty that we all encounter growing up, and The Savage runs brave and barefoot through that territory beautifully. Almond and McKean are masters of sparse and deft description, perfectly capturing both stillness and raw emotion - all with a quiet hum of magic in the background. * The List *
