  A six year old boy called Seth is abandoned in a lane in Rottingham and is taken in by a baker's wife and her husband, but they decide that they cannot look after him, and so they send him to a relation's farm at Milton. As Seth grows older he learns about farming and he falls in love with Sarah, the miller's daughter. They plan to marry but disaster strikes. Seth is comforted by the last person in the village he wants to see, Sam, who is the daughter of Lord Thackeray of Milton, but eventually they fall in love and get married. Seth and Sam become successful farmers in their own right, on the farm that they are given by his lordship as a wedding present.
