The Routledge International Handbook of Language Education Policy in Asia (Routledge International Handbooks)

by Andy Kirkpatrick (Editor), Andy Kirkpatrick (Editor), Anthony J. Liddicoat (Editor)

Synopsis

The aim of this handbook is to publish a comprehensive, must-have survey of the field. It reviews the language education polices of Asia (30 countries sub-divided by regions, namely East, Southeast, South and Central Asia) and considers the extent to which these are being implemented and with what effect. The handbook also offers themed chapters on topics such as Literacy Policy, Medium of Instruction Policy, the Status of Minority Languages, and Mother Tongue Education.

The most recent iteration of language education policies of each of the countries will be described and the impact and potential consequence of any changes will be critically considered. Each country chapter provides a historical overview of the languages in use and language education policies, examines the ideologies underpinning the language choices, and will also include an account of the debates and controversies surrounding language and language education policies and conclude with some predictions for the future.
