Surfing Spaces (Routledge Research in Culture, Space and Identity)

Surfing Spaces (Routledge Research in Culture, Space and Identity)

by Jon Anderson (Author)

Synopsis

This book offers a critical examination of the construction of surfing spaces, examining the `where' of surfing to explore how surfers order and border the places of the beach, as well as the `place' of the surfed wave itself. It explores how the surfed wave can be understood as an `event' that transforms the identity of the participant, evokes relational sensibilities and promotes both spirituality and feelings of home. Theories of non-representation and more-than-representation are adopted to analyse how surfers communicate these embodied experiences to others. The book also investigates how mobility changes surfing places, through local conflicts, global cultures, and consequences of colonisation. Social movements within surfing are also explored, as well as the commodification of surfing and the economic valuation of the wave.
