  Security sector reform became one of the most important instruments to establish peace in Sierra Leone as war came to an end in the late 1990s and early 2000s. How did it shape Sierra Leone? The book shows comprehensively how practices of security sector reform have intermingled with and shaped, but also been shaped by practices and discourse of security provision from the national to the local level in Sierra Leone. Security sector reform was one of the most important instruments in establishing peace in Sierra Leone as war came to an end in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Second, it provides a comprehensive critique of how the notion of hybridity has been applied in peace and security studies as well as cultural studies. Third, and more narrowly oriented towards literature on Sierra Leone, the book will be the first of its kind to take the debate on security beyond a focus on conflict and peacebuilding and explore everyday policing and order-making in rural Sierra Leone.

  The book stands out due to the breadth of data that it draws upon, which has been collected during fieldwork in both rural and urban Sierra Leone. Similarly, it stands out for its interdisciplinary approach, combining anthropology and international relations/political science within one framework of analysis. Based on fieldwork between 2005 and 2015, the book is based on 200+ interviews with relevant international, national and local actors, ethnographic fieldwork in Freetown and Kono district, and work directly with key actors in the security sector as a consultant, primarily for the UK government.

  This book will be of much interest to students of critical security, anthropology, African politics and IR in general.
