Carbs & Cals: A Visual Guide to Carbohydrate & Calorie Counting for People with Diabetes

by Chris Cheyette (Author), YelloBalolia (Author)

Synopsis

Carbs & Cals is an easy-to-understand visual guide to carbohydrate and calorie counting in diabetes management. It contains over 1,200 photos of popular UK food & drink items, with the carbohydrate & calorie values clearly displayed above each photo. The 13-page introduction to the book explains the effect of carbohydrate on blood sugar levels and explores the amount of calories we need in our diet, giving practical tips on how to use the book for diabetes control and weight management. The 217 pages of photographs are arranged into 15 colour-coded sections: Biscuits & Crackers, Bread, Breakfast, Cakes & Bakery, Desserts, Drinks, Fruit, Meals, Meal Accompaniments, Meat & Fish Products, Potatoes, Rice, Pasta & Grains, Snacks & Confectionery, Take-away Food, and Vegetables & Pulses. There are up to 6 different portion photos for each food, with their corresponding carbohydrate and calorie values displayed above each photo. This provides users with an easy comparison to the food on their plate and a helpful guide to the carbohydrate and calories they are consuming. The prepared/cooked weight is also shown below each photo. Carbohydrate counting is an important part of diabetes management, particularly for Type 1 diabetes, and this book is an invaluable support tool for anyone engaged in this process. For people with Type 2 diabetes or those trying to lose weight, Carbs & Cals vastly simplifies the calorie counting process. It takes out the guesswork and time spent weighing food by showing the calorie content in each food photograph. This allows the user to make choices on how to reduce calories and fat intake by choosing a smaller portion or swapping a food item that is high in calories for a healthier option. The book is in association with Diabetes UK.

Media Reviews
Customer reviews: This book has been life-changing for my son & husband, both of whom are diabetic. Having been a diabetic for nearly 60 years this has to be the best book I've ever seen. This book should become the bible for any Diabetics and for people on a reduced calorie diet. This amazingly simple book has helped me to take control of my diabetes when I was really struggling. With big coloured pictures, it's a breeze. Beats all the wordy lists in other guides. The most useful book I have bought since being diagnosed. Finally someone has come up with something useful and easy to use. This book has made my life as a self employed plasterer one heck of a lot easier. My new bible. Has made my daughter's life so much easier, she has much better control of her blood sugar levels now and I am certain it is down to the book. Our daughter is 4 and it is great to really show her friends' parents how many carbs are in the meal they are about to give her. My son can look at the pictures and try new foods, we can monitor his intake of carbs and it has made our whole family aware of calories and carbs intake. I bought this book for my 16 year old as she has been struggling with her HbA1c recently and she loves it. Healthcare professionals: The most useful tool I have had as a diabetes specialist nurse. I am a UK registered Dietitian and I think this book is fantastic! My patients all love it. Brilliant book, helps me to teach patients with diabetes about sensible food portion sizes. A fantastic resource for both healthcare professionals and the individuals we see in supporting weight loss and glycaemic control.
