Salt and Honey

by Candi Miller (Author)

Synopsis

Having been forced to leave her grandmother to die at the Mother Hills, Koba's family are discovered by a party of white hunters as they flee to safety. A chase ensues and ends tragically as Koba has to watch her parents being humiliated and murdered. Koba is taken on by Marta and her family and travels across southern Africa to their game park. She quickly learns to adapt and survive and after saving her from being raped by Andre, she and Mannie begin to grow closer. However, a dawn raid shatters the peace and it is left to Marta and Deon to find out where the children are being held and to do everything possible to fight the brutal Apartheid laws to secure their release. And even if they are eventually successful, will Koba remain with her new family or will she have to desert them and return to her tribal roots?

Barbara Trapido 'Not many books take you inside the Sans tribes of this African region...An interesting and worthwhile debut.' The Herald 'The novel is authentic and fascinating...with a most moving element that, at times, had me on the verge of tears.' Burton Mail 'A novel like 'Salt & Honey' can help to create awareness of injustice still being suffered by tribal people.' Miriam Ross, Survival International
Author Bio
Candi Miller was born and educated in Africa, but now lives in England where she teaches Creative Writing. In 1994 she undertook an expedition to the Kalahari Desert to visit groups of San people. There she was caught up in one of the largest veld fires ever to sweep the sub-continent, charged by a bull elephant and enchanted by Ju/'hoansi story-telling around a campfire. This is her first novel.
