The Concrete Sea

by JohnDalton (Author)

Synopsis

Don Avoca, a private investigator from the north, arrives in a Midlands city. Fifteen months earlier student Kate Connor had disappeared off the face of the earth, and Don's boss wants him to lay this mystery to rest. At the office of Metropolitan Investigations, in the shadow of a stilted motorway, he joins forces with Jackie. Together they follow up their only lead: to unravel the kinks in Kate's friendship with the daughter of a big-time peddler of dope. But Don's haunted by his own losses. He struggles to stay afloat as tragedy's impact casts him down. In the paranoid city night he dreams of something pernicious out there in the grids of stars and block on block of deep shadow. A fishy voice in his head drives him to violence and unpredictability as he trawls through desolate scrap yards, drug dens and estate pubs. As double-crossing gangsters and vicious lowlife threaten, it's only his partnership with Jackie that offers any glimpse of bright escape.

Media Reviews
Dalton evokes a strong empathy for the downtrodden, taking pride of place among British crime writing's dirty realists. The slick tale unfolds like a whiplash * Guardian *
