Synopsis

The story of a young couple who have a deep love for each other, a love that is beyond the everyday kind, it is the kind of love that is deep and sacred and comes from God. But they are forced to separate from each other by their community. Rachel feels the terrible shame of not having produced a child for her husband after several years of marriage. His father, the Rabbi, insists that he divorce his beloved wife and he is too intimidated to resist. However, Rachel has been to the clinic and had a fertility test. There is no problem with conceiving a baby on her side. How can she bring herself to mention this to her husband as it would humiliate him to know the truth? But how can she bear to watch him marry another?

Media Reviews
'...goes way beyond the anecdotal to resemble a kind of universal tragedy, we watch as the absurd conflict between love and a life lived within the strict confines of religious laws, is played out on the world stage...' LE MONDE 'In Rachel and Naomi, Abecassis creates two powerful and sympathetic heroines, and the power and beauty of her writing renders their story both heartbreaking and hypnotic.' THE OBSERVER
