Synopsis

Maureen Fenner was born in 1955 in Ashford, a market town in south-east Kent. She contracted polio at the age of three months and as a result both of her arms and her left hand were paralysed. She also lost most of the use of her right hand and her legs were severely weakened by the virus. From the age of three to 16 years she was educated and cared for at Chailey Heritage, a specialised school in East Sussex which also provided clinical and medical care. Maureen learned to type with the use of an adapted typewriter and secured secretarial work both in her home town of Ashford and then in Brighton on the South coast. She married and had two children; Emma, born in 1978, and Lucy, born prematurely in 1982 weighing only 1lb 13oz. Maureen learned to care for her children with the limited use of her limbs and by carrying them in her teeth! Maureen currently lives in Ashford with her husband, Jeff, and Lucy. She works part time for the Wheelchair Users Group in Folkestone.
