Over the Rainbow (Art & Poetry)

by ErnestHarburg (Author), Maxfield Parrish (Illustrator)

Synopsis

Over the Rainbow is the fifth instalment in Welcome's Art and Poetry series, which celebrates the passions of life through unique pairings of words and art. Very few songs have so taken hold of people's hearts and imaginations the way Harburg's Over the Rainbow has stirring in anyone who hears the words a wistful desire for a trouble-free life. So reflective of an innate sense of joy, this song finds the perfect visual partner in the colour-infused paintings of Parrish, whose work appears to generate an inner light, resulting in a feeling of warmth and exuberance. Together, they result in an elegant evocation of the human spirit, particularly in times of difficulty.

Author Bio
E.Y. YIP HARBURG (1896-1981) wrote more than 500 songs, many of which accompanied the music of Harold Arlen, who was the composer for Over the Rainbow. Harburg's voice was at once sceptical and optimistic, and his songs express plaintive yearning in a witty and memorable way. MAXFIELD PARRISH (1870-1966) is widely considered to be one of America's greatest twentieth-century illustrators. Extensively reproduced in books, art prints, calendars, magazines, and advertisements during his lifetime, his illustrations provided Parrish with a great deal of exposure and loyal fan base. His paintings, as well, were hugely popular and were distinguished by the artist's preoccupation with fanciful and idyllic scenes peopled with idealized or whimsical figures.
