  Shrewsbury School has enjoyed long periods of success and acclaim as well as passing through a few distinctly discouraging times. This book traces the development of the school. It is about the life of the school - its pupils, staff, and headmasters - and focuses particularly on those men whose vision, inspiration and strength have made the school what it is today. A period of real achievement in the middle of the 16th century under the headmastership of Thomas Ashton was followed by over a century of decline, from which the headmaster Samuel Butler rescued the school in 1798. The inclusion of Shrewsbury as one of the nine schools of national reputation examined by the Clarendon Commission of 1861 and its inclusion in the subsequent Public Schools Act conferred considerable status on the school. Henry Whitehead Moss successfully moved the school to its present site in 1882. This provided an ideal environment for the school to grow and develop in the 20th century, when it has evolved to meet the changing needs of the times. The author of this book is an Old Salopian and a distinguished Classicist. His previous publications include the Helen of Euripides (with James Michie), substantial contributions to the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations and the Encyclopaedia of Oxford , and many reviews and articles on classical and financial subjects.
