This book is part of a series which tells young children about the members of a typical family. It shows them how they came to have their parents, and explains that their mothers and fathers were together before they themselves were born and it describes how parents care for their young children. The book begins with two people meeting, getting married, and having a baby. The story is then taken up by the child himself. In his own words, he desribes how, from the time he was born, his parents fed him, dressed him and bathed him, helped him learn to walk and took him to school. He also describes the arrival of his little sister. When he is ill his parents care for him, and when he is happy they are happy too. Above all, we see him as part of a family. There is a section for teachers and parents which includes notes on how to use the book with pre-readers and first readers, and suggested discussion points which relate specifically to the illustrations. Roger Coote has written a number of other Firefly titles, including those in the My World and Journeys series. ading and Language Information Centre.
