41 Seconds from Terror to Freedom: Inside the Most Spectacular Hostage Rescue of Our Time and Its Stunning Aftermath

by Luis Giampietri (Author), Bill Salisbury (Author), Lorena Ausejo (Author)

Synopsis

In 1996, fourteen members of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement raided a party at the official residence of Japan's ambassador to Peru. The militants, disguised as catering staff, were able to gain access to the complex without detection. With a huge array of weapons, including AKM rifles, Uzi submachine guns and hand grenades, the militants took hostage hundreds of high-level diplomats, government and military officials and business executives. This book tells the extraordinary story of the hostage rescue. The author, a retired admiral, was both a hostage and a key player in the rescue. The crisis lasted 126 days, and was eventually brought to an end by the Peruvian Armed Forces. Through the use of a number of tunnels and explosive charges, the commandos were able to take control of the building. Only one hostage and two soldiers were killed in the operation; all fourteen revolutionaries were killed. This compelling book, which is filled with action, military detail, intrigue and betrayal, reads like a fast-paced novel, and provides a fascinating account of this spectacular hostage rescue.

Media Reviews
'A gripping and well-written story that is better than a novel. On September 11, 2001 the vast majority of Americans came to the realization that they could be victims of terrorism. As we respond to that threat, it would be instructive to read how someone who has faced that challenge responded with bravery and resolve.' - Dennis Jett, former US Ambassador to Peru
