Synopsis

Beautiful Twenty somethings is a vivid firsthand account of the life of Marek Hlasko, a young writer whose iconoclastic way of life became an inspiration in 1950s Poland. Detailing relationships with such giants of Polish culture as the filmmaker Roman Polanski and the novelist Jerzy Andrzejewski, this memoir recounts his adventures and misadventures abroad in the postwar era. When he was recalled to Poland in 1958, Hlasko refused to return and was stripped of his Polish citizenship. He spent the rest of his life working in exile.

Media Reviews

A self-taught writer with an uncanny gift for narrative and dialogue...[Hlasko was] a born rebel and troublemaker of immense charm.

-Roman Polanski, in Roman

Ross Ufberg renders Hlasko's direct, often street-smart language-with its sometimes angry and sometimes lyrical tone-with dexterity and grace. His translation has the energy and 'flow' of the original and is highly readable. -Jaroslaw Anders, author of Between Fire and Sleep: Sketches on Modern Polish Poetry and Prose The new translation of Beautiful Twentysomethings by Ross Ufberg gives justice to Hlasko's unique, yet still relatively unheard voice, and exquisitely preserves both the playfulness of his language and the bitterness of his insight. -Slavic and East European Journal
