Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was in many ways the quintessential Impressionist painter, exhibiting at all eight Impressionist exhibitions, and retaining to the end of his life an interest in the direct observation of nature. But he was unique among the French artists who visited London in the latter part of the 19th century in his choice of subject matter, repeatedly painting the city's suburbs - many of their features recognisable today - in preference to grander sights and monuments.
