Media Reviews
A masterpiece...an inventive story-within-a-story with a cast of engaging toy characters -- Marilyn Brocklehurst The Bookseller 20120525 Summer is a time when toys often get left in the garden overnight - Mini Grey's Toys in Space is a playful take on what might happen to them before morning. Junior 20120301 Books We Like August 2012...Children will love this hugely imaginative and appealing story from award-winning picture book creator Mini Grey. The beautifully-laid out pages are packed with details to explore, and Grey's illustrations are full of humour and warmth. Wonderdoll and all the other toys are brilliantly characterised, and any young reader who has ever misplaced a much-loved toy will emphathise with the plight of the unhappy but endearing Hoctopize - and will especially enjoy the story's pleasingly reassuring happy ending. Booktrust ...if playful flights of fancy are your thing then Toys in Space by Mini Grey is another winner. Grey has the rare ability to be at once crystal clear and offbeat. Her beautifully constructed narrative starts with forlorn, frightened toys left out at night in a summer garden. One of them - the scruffy Wonder Doll - cheers them up with an amazing story of a spaceship which turns out to contain hundreds of lost toys, like prisoners of war. Happily we are about to oversee their liberation. The story is illustrated with Grey's inimitable bizarre zest and is absorbing, unpredictable and engaging. -- Kate Kellaway The Observer Toys in Space by Mini Grey is our kind of book, all about stories providing comfort, where what is a 'story' and what is 'real life' become beautifully blurred. It starts with an observation about family life which is tiny but which resonates loudly with us...So a great start - we open Mini's latest book and the girls already think it is about our home (or so easily could be)...Without giving away the details, the emotional arc we went through...[was] A perfect journey for a picture book! As well as the thrilling emotional ride this book takes you on (with just the right amount of nerves for young children), this book scores highly for its adorable cast of characters...Toys in Space is an exciting and heart warming story about losing (and finding) your favourite toy and is bound to delight children far and wide.
