When Football Was Football: West Bromwich Albion: A Nostalgic Look at a Century of the Club

by David Instone (Author)

Synopsis

Long before West Bromwich Albion became regular members of the Premier League, they were performing stirring deeds on the playing fields of England and beyond. As founder members of the Football League, they have a rare place in the game's folklore, with the iconic names to go with it. Billy Bassett, Jesse Pennington, Tommy Glidden, WG Richardson, Ronnie Allen, Ray Barlow, Jeff Astle, Tony Brown, Cyrille Regis, the Pearsons and the Everisses...an illustrious list, indeed. Thankfully, a club who won the League Championship almost a century ago and have also lit up the Black Country with FA Cup and League Cup triumphs, plus some conquests abroad, have been a magnet for eagle-eyed Daily Mirror photographers. Many of the superb images in this publication are previously unseen and illustrate the dramatic Baggies story.

Author Bio
This is David Instone's fifth book about West Bromwich Albion after When We Won The Cup, Forever Albion, Albion Glory and Albion Memories. He saw his first game at The Hawthorns in 1964 and lived through the club's great cup-fighting days of that era, in which they reached four major finals and a European quarter-final. Resident with his wife Liz in Shropshire, he also works as a freelance for The Independent and Independent on Sunday and still regularly reports on Baggies games.
