  E. J. Scovell was born in the same year as Auden and MacNeice, but only began publishing in the mid-1940's, and her talent was neither for sophisticated fireworks nor for the neo-Romantic verse popular at the time. She was and remains a reflective poet, sometimes metaphysical, always with the deftest sense of how rhythm carries imagery and argument. She writes with particular brilliance about sea and water, about flowers, about childhood and old age.
