Life in a Country House: Upstairs & Downstairs (History)

by EdwardHayward (Author)

Synopsis

Life above and below stairs was very different. Whilst the master and mistress often worked hard for the benefit of the local community, they did not expect to undertake any of the domestic tasks carried out by their servants. Followers and relatives were not encouraged below stairs, but contacts were still maintained despite great distances. There were several magazines for those in service, advertising available positions, but in many households servants stayed for years and strong bonds developed between a family and their servants.
