This first issue of Rising East includes: Drew Stevenson on values, vision and governance in East London; Ken Worpole on what makes a novel an East End novel; and the latest statistics and analysis from the labour market. The Rising East series aims to engage with the future development of East London, to give voice to its community and culture. It explores the region's status as the biggest zone of regeneration in Europe, addressing the problems of social division and exclusion that affect the ethnically diverse population whose lives are entwined with the new infrastructures. The purpose of the series is to develop an integrated vision for the area, and to be of local, national and international interest. Published three times a year, each issue covers a variety of connected issues, with four sections to encompass a wide range of different perspectives. The themes include: policy research on economic and social strategy; Trends East - social and economic developments; Arty Facts - illustrated essays on the region for the more culturally orientated; and Reviews - East London art and literature.
