Media Reviews
... the best introductory text on South Africa for beginning undergraduates has been made even better. Before considering the revisions and additions, it is worth reminding readers of why the book is so good for its target audience. The graphic presentation is outstanding. Maps and illustrations abound on almost every page. Many of these are drawn from nineteenth-century engravings which imbue the text with an aura of historic romance. The chapters and subheadings are clearly set out. Notes and bibliography are useful without being overwhelming. A great deal of care has been given to the revised sections. - Norman Etherington in AFRICAN STUDIES REVIEW ... admirable and balanced account... - Phyllis Martin in THE FRIEND ... a high standard of accuracy and detail in this straightforward and intelligent narrative designed to provide the general reader with a more complex understanding of the subject. ... Frequent headings and subheadings, helpful bibliographies at the end of each chapter, wide margins, attractive design, and a wealth of illustrations enhance the appeal of this timely and useful book.
