Superstition: True Story of the Nanny They Called a Witch

by Guy Lyon Playfair (Afterword), Carole Compton (Author), Gerald Cole (Author)

Synopsis

Carole Compton was 19 years old when she went with her Italian boyfriend to work as a nanny in Italy. A shy, ordinary girl, suspicions were aroused about her when a series of strange and unexplained fires occurred in both of the homes in which she worked. Disliked and distrusted by an hysterical and superstitious grandmother, Carole was accused of sorcery when the baby in her charge was nearly burnt to death in a cot fire. To Carole's horror, the police took the charge seriously. She was arrested and made to stand trial for attempted murder. It was the beginning of a nightmare which was to culminate in her appearance in court in a cage. Displayed like an animal and with the court in an uproar she had to find the strength to battle accusations of witchery, paranormal powers and pyromania that could condemn her to 20 years in an Italian jail.
