Synopsis

Under the heading The Right Horse , the author discusses the practical considerations of available facilities; conformation in relation to performance and the all-important temperament. A separate chapter is included on the choice of a child's pony that complements its rider's temperament and ability. Methods of horse-keeping, feeding, conditioning to specific levels, and day-to-day management are all examined. The numerous examples of conditioning programmes, together with the specimen feed charts etc. included in these sections are especially valuable. The chapter on equipment which takes into account a variety of new materials and manufacturing techniques, emphasises the principles of bitting and saddle design in relation to practical horsemanship, and presents this fascinating subject in a different and original light. There are more chapters on shoeing and common ailments and an essentially practical section on riding theory and practice which the author describes as the end result - the objective towards which all aspects of management are directed.
