From its earliest years, Christianity got off to a flying start, attracting significant numbers. From Nero's time, persecution and illegality brought new difficulties for Christians, which persisted for nearly 250 years. Varied responses to the two-way pull of popularity and persecution led to some fragmentation. By the late second century, however, it was clear to an outside observer that the 'Great Church' was the Christian movement which mattered. Dr McKechnie offers a fresh view of how the church grew in numbers and influence, until not only legalisation of Christianity but also its official adoption became prudent policy for Rome.
