This atlas provides satellite images of the UK. The advantage of this type of atlas is the nature of satellite imagery which contains far more detail, more accurately, than a comparable map of similar scale. The satellite imagery contains all the information that can be sensed on or near the Earth's surface and therefore far more information is available to the reader. The images within the atlas fall into three groups: the main group, comprising the systematic coverage of Britain; the specialized Landsat images, illustrating a variety of natural and man-made features; and examples of other satellite images, showing the different techniques and applications of these images. The Landsat images have been generated from the Landsat mosaic produced by the National Remote Sensing Centre at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough. The atlas images have been reproduced on a scale of 1:500,000, in simulated natural colour. The eight special geographical images are at 1:100,000. Each image is accompanied by an interpretive map, compiled directly from satellite images, and a short descriptive text, giving the more important features that can be observed on the adjacent image. The atlas also contains an introduction to techniques and hardware, a glossry of terms and a directory of manufacturers and research institutes.
