Getting the Buggers to Think

Getting the Buggers to Think

by SueCowley (Author)

Synopsis

Teaching thinking in general, rather than merely teaching thinking within curricular subject areas, has become an extremely trendy area of education. In Britain both the current Education Secretary and his last two predecesors have given it priority and devoted plenty of resources to it (witness the forthcoming DfES website on the subject). Few teachers covered this area in their pre-service training and so there is a large in-service demand (hence the rising sales each year of Robert Fisher's Teaching Thinking ). This guide from Sue Cowley provides an entertaining and accessible introduction to teaching thinking for teachers of all levels, covering key areas such as problem solving, developing creativity and lateral thinking.

Media Reviews
Within this book you'll find lots of different information, ideas and approaches for developing your students' thinking skills. As with all my books, my aim here is to give you practical strategies for developing these skills, ones that you can actually put directly into use in your classroom. As well as offering you suggestions for exercises and activities, I also cover the organizational aspects of teaching thinking in a classroom setting. My aim is to give advice that will be applicable to teachers across the primary and secondary spectrum, and for those who are working in all different areas of the curriculum.
A resolutely practical guide...precisely sequenced, heavy with activities and light on theory - just the way most teachers need such a book to be. The structure lends itself to dipping in for ideas. Times Educational Supplement (magazine), 11 January 2008
