All serious actors need and want to act in commercials, both for the money and for the visibility. Commercial auditions usually constitute an actor's first appearance in front of a camera, and require a specific type of acting quite distinct from stage acting abilities. But even after several failed auditions, few actors properly apply their skills to commercials, and therefore rarely succeed in landing such jobs. This book addresses the many unique challenges facing the actor appearing on camera: how to focus the performance on the commercial's sales thrust; understanding and utilising stereotypes expected by advertisers and their audiences; how the camera emphasises the visible link between acting and behaviour; balancing control and improvisation within the confines of a 28-second spot; how to analyse advertising copy; executing effective one-liners; and dealing with such potential trouble areas as vocal production problems and physical tensions.
