Synopsis

Children, octogenarians and everyone in between know the work of William Steig, the beloved cartoonist, sculptor and multiple award-winning children's book author ( Shrek ). For over seventy years, his cartoons graced the covers and pages of the New Yorker . He is the author of forty books; all but five of them are for children. Jeanne Steig has uncovered over five hundred, never-before-published cartoons by her husband. Collected here for the first time, the book is divided into seven sections: Ladies and Gents, Dogs, Odd Ducks, Bodily Harm, Art, Cats and Clowns & Ninnies. Each section is prefaced with text by Jeanne and the book is rounded out with an expanded version of her New York Times Op-ed appreciation of her husband, which she wrote upon his death on October 3, 2003, as well as an introduction by Roz Chast and an afterword by Jules Feiffer.

Author Bio
Jeanne Steig is the author of several books, including. In addition to her literary talents, Steig is a self-taught visual artist, working almost exclusively with found materials. William Steig (1907-2003) was a beloved artist and writer best known for Shrek (the basis of the blockbuster film series). Steig started his career as a cartoonist for the New Yorker and then at age sixty, published his first children's book. Roz Chast is a cartoonist whose work regularly appears in the New Yorker. Jules Feiffer is an award-winning writer, illustrator, screenwriter, playwright, children's book author and cartoonist.
