Book Overview: While Internet Explorer is the dominant web browser in use today, many users have long complained about its lack of certain features that power users crave to personalize their web experience. In November 2004, Mozilla released Firefox, an open source alternative browser which quickly made a 25 million-download-sized dent in IE's browser domination and has enjoyed much positive press exposure. Firefox and Thunderbird: Beyond Browsing and Email contains everything readers need to know, focusing on how to configure and customize many less than intuitive features. The author gives readers a path through Firefox's many options, explaining which should be adjusted, which shouldn't, and how to locate the many hidden preferences. Readers will find tips and tricks for adjusting the browser's appearance and behavior, including Firefox extensions and themes, and how to install the most popular extensions. Several chapters cover Thunderbird's built-in spam filters, calendar, and customizable layout and toolbars. While many features of Firefox and Thunderbird sound simple, even savvy web surfers report problems and complications with configurations and features. Finally, as open source projects, Firefox and Thunderbird are attractive options for millions of open source developers and others who prefer alternatives to Microsoft applications. The final sections of the book discuss further customizations for web developers who want to create their own extensions or contribute to the further development of Firefox.
