Synopsis

In 1761, a young African girl was sold to the Wheatley family in Boston. The family named her Phillis after the schooner that transported her to slavery. Kidnapped from her home in Africa, she had everything taken away from her - her family, her name, her language. But Phillis Wheatley was no ordinary young girl. Author Bio
Kathryn Lasky is a Newbery Honor Award-winning author. She has written many books for children, including Vision of Beauty: The Story of Sarah Breedlove Walker and Interrupted Journey. She says that she was drawn to Phillis Wheatley's story because she was fascinated with the relationship between the writer's voice, identity and freedom. Paul Lee is a painter and illustrator who also occasionally illustrates comics. While working on A Voice of her Own, Paul had to do considerable research - including trips to the library and renting costumes from a local opera house - to ensure that the illustrations were historically accurate.
