The Dragon Chronicles: The Lost Journals of the Great Wizard, Septimus Agorius

by Garry Walton (Illustrator), Malcolm Sanders (Author)

Synopsis

The recently discovered diary of the Great Wizard, Septimus Agorius, chronicles a two-year odyssey to hunt down and slay four malevolent dragons. Part adventure and part dragon encyclopedia, it combines a thrilling story with fantasy artwork and reproductions of 'real' items such as dragon teeth, maps, and ancient documents. The Dragon Chronicles is a "faithful" reproduction of the journal kept by the Great Wizard, Septimus Agorius, detailing his attempts to hunt down and slay four malevolent dragons in accordance with the wishes of the dying king. In this task he is assisted not only the by King's fiercest warriors, but also by sundry artists and assistants whose job it is to keep records and gather as much information as possible about these mysterious beasts. Should the mission fail, the King reasons, at least others who are brave enough to follow in their footsteps might benefit from the knowledge they have garnered on their travels. He could not have known that the book he commissioned would come to be regarded as the definitive work on the subject, referred to again and again by dragon hunters in the centuries that followed. Many dramatic encounters are documented in the wizard's diaries whilst the drawings and paintings produced by those accompanying him gradually reveal the physiology of the dragons, their behaviour patterns, hunting techniques and, ultimately, the reason they have turned against humankind. Also featured in the book are a great many samples that were collected during the two year odyssey including dragon teeth, shell fragments, pieces of skin, and even the outstretched wing of a dragon hatchling. Part adventure, part encyclopedia, The Dragon Chronicles, is a unique work combining story-telling with a wealth of fascinating illustration. What really sets it apart is the illusion of great antiquity created by specialised "trompe l'oeil" techniques.
