by Lorna Oakes (Author), Lucia Gahlin (Author), Lucia Gahlin (Author), Lorna Oakes (Author)

Synopsis

The allure of ancient Egypt has endured over many centuries and this book takes you through all the main sites, temples and tombs, and investigates how mythology and religion underpinned this great civilization. All the most famous burial sites are covered, including Giza, Saqqara and the Valley of the Kings. The awe-inspiring temples are depicted from those dedicated to gods and goddesses like Hathor to the mortuary temples of Ramesses II. "The Mysteries of Ancient Egypt" looks in detail at the myths surrounding each of the gods and goddesses and their role in Creation, and how the pharaoh was the embodiment of a divine being. Funerary rituals, festivals and superstitions are also explored, as well as an in-depth examination of the crucial role that religious belief and mythology played. It includes a chronology of ancient Egypt, charting the events of a society that flourished over three millennia.
