Eastern Journeys by Train: From Africa to the Far East: Great Train Journeys of the East

by Max Wade - Matthews (Author)

Synopsis

There are few finer and more breathtaking railway journeys than those enjoyed in the Eastern hemisphere. Construction of the railways began in the late-18th century and miles of track opened up vast tracts of lands, making spectacular journeys for the intrepid explorer. This volume encounters 49 routes experienced firsthand. There are long, short, old and new routes, some famous and some less travelled. Many have been preserved due to their important historical links or fantastic scenery, notably the route through India's once hazardous Khyber Pass. For lovers of speed and technology, there are the futuristic bullet trains of Japan. The guide features descriptive detail of the routes and images of both the trains and the scenery that they journey through.
