What We All Want

What We All Want

by Michelle Berry (Author)

Synopsis

A brilliant, original, dark and funny novel about three grown-up siblings dealing with the death of their alcoholic mother, Becka. Becka's daughter Hilary has nursed her through liver cancer; Hilary's brothers, Thomas and Billy, have been away for years, unable to cope with their mother. But they come back to bury her. Becka insists that she wants to bury her in the back garden where she can keep an eye on her. As the three siblings quarrel over the details, Dick Mortimer the mortician intervenes. Can love flourish among the embalming fluids and solid oak coffins...? Uniquely comic with a tragic edge, WHAT WE ALL WANT renders an incisive yet tender portrait of the strangeness of families and the universal desire for acceptance.

Book Overview: 'Apparently what we all want is a childhood lived in the bosom of a warm family...What we frequently get is something else entirely - and it's this contradiction that Berry cleverly taps into...WWAW is more than a nod in the direction of master story-tellers Anne Tyler and Terry McMillan - and couldn't be more different. Taking a leaf out of their books by nailing characters dead-on, creating pitch-perfect dialogue and effortlessly telling a big-hearted, perfectly paced story, Berry turns the potentially schmaltzy into a profound contemplation of secrets and lies...What we should all want is more of Michelle Berry' Andrea Henry, Daily Mirror 'What most of us want is a cracking good read which is simultaneously unsettling and reassuring, able to tackle the dark side of our lives without leaving us disconsolate. We don't always get what we want, of course, but some books, like Michelle Berry's new novel, give more than a hint of it' Observer 'This is a dark novel told with macabre wit. It seems natural that these bizarre characters should bury Becka in the back garden, arguing and fighting eveb as they fill her coffin with keepsakes' Punch
