The Congress Of Rough riders

by JohnBoyne (Author)

Synopsis

William Cody grows up surrounded by his father's tales of Buffalo Bill, to whom he is distantly related, and his own fantasies of the Wild West. Though he escapes his heritage by fleeing abroad and starting a new life for himself, he finds that he is always drawn back to England and to his ancestry. When his father proposes that together they should recreate Buffalo Bill's stage show, 'The Congress of Rough Riders of the World' for a contemporary audience, William refuses to have any part in it. When tragedy strikes however, it is to his father that he eventually returns.

Book Overview: A highly original novel by a young author who has already been shortlisted for the Hennessy Literary Award A promotable author - a graduate of the creative writing course at the University of East Anglia 'A treat...a plot split between vivid leaps backward to grimy 18th-century Dover, the French Revolution or Gatsby-esque 1920s Hollywood' Scotsman 'Brilliant...a total blast...wonderfully unhinged...Not only is all the Buffalo Bill material brilliant, it is matched by a crazy contemporary narrative that moves through Toyko, Paris, New York and Clapham..the plot is dazzling throughout...This is clever, provocative stuff, and a fitting end to an exhaustive novel. The Congress of Rough Riders is a formidable achievement, and should be required reading for anyone whose interest in historical fiction is restricted to thinking how much fun it must have been to live in the past' Matt Thorne, Independent on Sunday

Media Reviews
The charm of history in this book lies in imagining how exciting it would have been to live there. OBSERVER Boyne is an engaging writer who succeeds in making his readers care about the confused and rather selfish William. DAILY TELEGRAPH At its best, Boyne's story has echoes of John Irving's sprawling family epics. This is an entertaining campfire story. TIME
