Media Reviews
Sylvia Firth - Children's Literature
This is another title in the I Am Reading series designed for children beginning to read independently. The main character is Nancy, who loves everything that shines and glitters. Her pet dog Sniffer is a bloodhound equipped with a very large golden nose. Nancy has trained Sniffer to discover objects made of gold which he then retrieves for her. Upon hearing of the king's beautiful new golden crown, Nancy is determined to add it to her collection. But this time something goes very wrong and Nancy finds herself in serious trouble. Like the fairy tales of old, everything works out in the end. The cartoonlike and colorful illustrations are a good accompaniment to the story. Where there is a need for books for children wanting chapter books, this is an acceptable addition. 2006, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin, Ages 6 to 8.

Gr 1-2-Naughty Nancy's bloodhound has been trained to find anything made of gold for his owner. When he steals the crown of the new king, Nancy wears it to bed, and it sticks to her head. The soldiers come looking for it, arrest her, and take her back to the castle, where the king falls in love with her and asks her to marry him. She agrees, and abruptly stopped being naughty. She realized what a bad person she had been. She was truly sorry and returned all of her stolen things. Cheerful cartoon illustrations can't rescue this weak, silly plot.-Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
