Media Reviews
Sally J. K. Davies - Children's Literature The huge glowing satellite dish on the front cover is an appropriate image for this book. Much of this book deals with the astronomers throughout the ages and how they viewed the sky and interpreted what they saw. The first section called, Looking at the Universe, shows the view of the universe from our planet, discusses the earliest astronomers and astronomers throughout history, their theories and work. This section also examines the different telescopes and radio wave collectors currently used and their locations around the world. The final part of this section also briefly touches on the invisible universe of x-rays, the search for dark matter, mars explorers, and Cassini, the Saturn explorer. The second section called, The Solar System, focuses on the solar system: the sun, the earth, the earth's moon, the rock based planets, Jupiter, meteorites, asteroids, the planetary moons, the ringed planets, and icy comets. The final section deals with the The Realm of the Stars and includes chapters on the stellar life cycle, how we see stars, giants, dwarfs, the death of a star, galaxies, life in outer space, and how astronomers piece together the history and future of the big bang. The images in the book are a nice mix of artistic interpretation, historical photos, and photos from space. The back matter contains an index, a glossary, and lengthy acknowledgements. This book is part of Kingfisher's The World of series, which includes the titles The World of Ballet, The World of Castles, The World of Dinosaurs, The World of Exploration, The World of Horses, The World of Pirates, The World of Pyramids, and The World of Ships, 2006, Kingfisher, Ages 8 to 12.
