Synopsis

Business is poor at Mrs Hippo's Pizza Parlour. William and Mrs Hippo are worried, but when accident-prone Ellie Bear comes to play with William, she takes all their attention! Mrs Hippo decides to take the youngsters out for a ride in her motorbike sidecar, to keep Ellie out of harm's way. After an eventful journey through the town, they end up on the beach, where Ellie writes her name in the sand, and William copies the idea with the message "Mrs Hippo's Pizzas Are The Best!" This book in the I Am Reading series is a little bit more advanced than others in the series. This book is a chapter book (very short chapters with numbered pages). With fewer pictures, longer paragraphs, and short chapters, this book builds confidence in a child's ability to read a story. The vocabulary is simple, yet stimulating. The last page of the story contains Strategies for Independent Readers. This is a set of ideas such as predicting what the book will be about, asking questions about important ideas in the story, or evaluating the book. These strategies should help the independent reader to better understand the book and gain more confidence in reading abilities. 2004 (orig. 1999), Houghton Mifflin Company/Kingfisher, Ages 6 to 8.

Author Bio
Vivian French is a world-renowned children's author and storyteller who has extensive experience of young children through her work in playgroups, drama workshops and theatre. She has had tremendous success in writing for this age group, with bestselling titles such as Hedgehogs Don't Eat Hamburgers and Guinea Pigs on the Go - also illustrated by Clive Scruton. She has been nominated for many awards - most recently for the 1995 Smarties Award with A Song for Toad (Walker). She regularly visits schools in the UK and tours often with Book Trust Scotland's Readiscovery Bus. Vivian French lives in Edinburgh. Clive Scruton is a successful picture book artist whose titles include Sidney the Monster by David Wood (Walker), It's a Go to the Park Day by Vivian French (Walker) and A Goodnight Kind of Feeling by Tony Bradman (HarperCollins).
