A Hidden Life

A Hidden Life

by Adele Geras (Author)

Synopsis

When Constance Barrington dies, she leaves behind a wealthy estate and a complex family network. But when the whole family gathers to hear her last will and testament, they are in for a terrible shock. Constance - possessed of a long memory and a spiteful disposition - altered her will shortly before her death. The new provisions are far from fair; some benefit hugely and others hardly at all. Constance's granddaughter, Louise, is bequeathed the copyright for her late grandfather's novels (barely remembered, long-since out of print and valuable only as a reminder of the man she loved). It is a paltry inheritance and one that comes to symbolise the inequity at the heart of the Barrington family. Soon, old family feuds and long-hidden resentments come to the surface - and with them, secrets start to emerge. But it is through Louise's inheritance - those dusty, long-forgotten books - that the most explosive secret of all will come to light, bringing with it a very different future for her and the rest of the family.

Media Reviews
'A Hidden Life by Adele Geras shows that the romantic novel is alive and well. It has a vindictive family will, affairs galore, long-lost relations appearing out of the woodwork and, above all, the good characters being rewarded and the morally suspect getting their just desserts' -- Rodney Troubridge THE BOOKSELLER 'I love books about books. I love books with interesting plots and well-written dialog that makes you want to read without interruption. A Hidden Life has all of this. I encourage everyone to read it!' EX LIBRIS 'I think its one of her best yet - a family saga in which a will sets the cat among the pigeons, providing a very satisfying read from conflict to resolution. Don't forget this for Christmas fiction shelves and Mother's Day; it would make a great gift for any lover of this genre!' -- SUE BAKER PUBLISHING NEWS 'As youd expect from Adele this is an intelligent and entertaining novel which appeals the literary palate just as much as it tickles the guilty pleasure taste buds...It is honest, acutely observed writing which has relationships spot on. I was reminded very much of Mary Wesleys novels, of which I am a big fan' -- Scott Pack MEANDMYBIGMOUTH 'an addictive read which, once started, is difficult to put down...Loved every minute of it. Highly recommended' RANDOM JOTTINGS 'This book is a great read for the end of the summer holidays' -- Melanie Whitehouse DAILY EXPRESS 'A great story, very skilfully told' GOOD BOOK GUIDE 'Always a joy to read, Geras conjures up potent family dramas with a degree of perception and wit that lifts her novels to another level.' AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S WEEKLY 'there is a Dickensian vividness in Adele's treatment of her characters, and her ability to juggle a large cast while closely portraying the emotional predicament of each is impressive' ELIZABETH BAINES BLOG
