The Silver Face (John Horn)

by EdwardWright (Author)

Synopsis

John Ray Horn knows all about regret. One-time hero in a series of cheap westerns, he now scrapes a living collecting debts for his old Indian co-star, Joseph Mad Crow. Then his past resurfaces in the form of an old flame and forgotten movie star. Rose Galen once had a talent that lit up the screen. Now she is a shattered creature, drink-sodden and haunted by some tragic event in her past. But before she can share her secret, Rose is murdered and Horn sets out with the aid of Mad Crow to find her killer. It is a quest that leads back into the dark heart of 1920s Hollywood, to a party where mobsters mingled with movie stars, and where a young girl met a terrible death.

Book Overview: Edward Wright's first novel, CLEA'S MOON, was the winner of the CWA Debut Dagger. Evocative and unusual late 40s LA setting and great series characters. Edward Wright has received excellent reviews for both CLEA'S MOON and THE SILVER FACE: 'Late 1940s Hollywood powerfully evoked ... Excellent, exciting ... packed with period detail, written from the heart and suffused with rare feeling' Literary Review. 'Rich with the sights, sounds and smells of this capital of film noir' Crime Time. 'Startlingly accomplished ... truly memorable' Sunday Times. 'Legitimately merits comparison to the work of James Ellroy ... Wright does a superb job of integrating a fair-play whodunit plot into a hard-boiled setting rife with personal and official corruption ... Wright's narrative gifts mark the arrival of a significant new noir voice who hopefully has many more Horn stories in him' Publishers Weekly. 'Deeply satisfying stuff: exciting, intelligent and tender where it most matters' Literary Review. Edward Wright's third novel, ON THE SIDE OF THE ANGELS, is due out Autumn 05 in Orion Trade.

Media Reviews
'Horn and Mad Crow ... are one of the finest double acts of crime fiction anywhere. The period is brilliantly captured, the characters are complex, and the author combines pace, surprises, humour and emotion with a wonderful literary style.' HUDDERSFIELD DAILY EXAMINER
Author Bio
Edward Wright grew up in Arkansas and was a naval officer and a newspaperman before discovering the greater satisfaction of writing fiction. Although transplanted to California, he remains partial to barbecue and bluegrass music. He also has an affinity for film noir. Among his regrets are never having met Will Shakespeare, Robert E. Lee, or Hank Williams. He and his wife, Cathy, live in the Los Angeles area but get away whenever possible to the lakes and trails of the eastern Sierra Nevada. Edward was awarded the coveted CWA Ellis Peters Memorial Dagger for his novel RED SKY LAMENT in October 2006.
