Drama City

Drama City

by George Pelecanos (Author)

Synopsis

In DRAMA CITY, George Pelecanos returns to contemporary Washington DC for his most powerful crime novel yet Lorenzo Brown is fresh out of the clink. The former drug enforcer has vowed to go straight and found himself a job as an officer for the Humane Society. He patrols downtown DC looking for ill-treated pets - but in the course of his day repeatedly comes face-to-face with his old life. Rachel Lopez is an attractive young probation officer. Brown is one of her clients but also fast becoming one of her friends - perhaps he is one that can be saved. Nigel Johnson is a smart young drug-dealer on the make. He has plans to make a lot of money AND stay alive to spend it. He already runs his neighbourhood but doesn't realise that he stands on the brink of a vicious turf war which could destroy him. From these basic players, Pelecanos weaves and amazing new novel, one that defines a generation of black, Hispanic and white Americans fighting - literally - for their lives.

Book Overview: George Pelecanos becomes more succesful with every book. His sales are increasing nearly as fast as the amount of positive coverage he gets for every new novel. Every event on his 2003 book tour was sold-out. DRAMA CITY marks a new high for his contemporary career. Powerful, moving and dark, it depicts a whole generation of young people at war with itself. Fans will love it, and new readers will discover it. '[Hard Revolution] is Dickensian in structure...Pelecanos's writing is direct and effective, with much period detail about cars and music, and he has a wonderful way with vernacular. The scenes of mob violence are minutely documented and the waste is appalling but, just as in Dickens, love finally conquers all.' Sunday Telegraph Pelecanos is a key member of the writing and production of hit US TV series THE WIRE, which arrives in the UK this fall.

Media Reviews
'Top-rate literary crime writer' THE BOOKSELLER 'Once again, Pelecanos treads the Washington DC soft shoe shuffle with assurance and pathos. Despairing characters flit across the drug saturated streets of the US capital in a wonderful, if tragic, waltz of despair. ... Pelecanos's view of life has always been bleak and this is no exception, but he displays such a ferocious understanding of street reality and an empathy for America's downtrodden that his books transcend their pulp origin. ... Savour while you can.' -- Maxim Jakubowski THE GUARDIAN 'Few American thirller writers can evoke the jagged rhythms of ghetto life as does George Pelecanos ... un-put-downable.' -- Myles McWeeney IRISH INDEPENDENT 'This had me ducking behind the covers.' THE MIRROR 'If you want journalistic realism about inner-city life, not lurid and twisty storytelling, he's your man.' SUNDAY TIMES '...not a conventional thriller. There is no detective, no mystery to solve; it is a novel about crime, its perpetrators and its victims. The picture of life in a Washington DC black ghetto is vivid and harrowing.' -- Susanna Yager SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
