Weston-Super-Mare Then & Now (Then and Now)

Weston-Super-Mare Then & Now (Then and Now)

by SharonPoole (Author), SharonPoole (Author)

Synopsis

The nineteenth century saw Weston-super-Mare grow from a tiny village of about 100 inhabitants to a thriving Victorian seaside resort of 20,000 people. Today it has a population of over 80,000. Despite changing fortunes during the twentieth century, as the traditional English week at the seaside was replaced by holidays overseas and short breaks in the UK, Weston has managed to adapt - and still flourishes.

Illustrated with ninety beautiful colour photographs, Weston-super-Mare Then & Now explores the modern townscape to discover what remains of Weston's past, and what has replaced features that have gone for ever.

Author Bio
Sharon Poole moved to Weston in 1971, the same year she began to work for the Museum Service. Part of her work at this time involved compiling a photographic record of Weston and the many changes that were occurring during this period. Over the subsequent years Sharon became curator of the local and social history collections at North Somerset Museum. Her first book was published in 1987 and since then she has written many more on Weston and the surrounding area. She left the Museum Service in 2001 but continues to take an active interest in the history of Weston and currently works as a freelance speaker, writer, and researcher.
