Synopsis

It was in the middle of a street fight during the dismal winter of 1775 that Margaret Knox first spotted Islay McInnes, a Highland girl struggling to make a living for herself and her dependants among the Paisley slums. At sixteen, Islay is already the head of her household and Margaret - a charity worker and teacher at the local school - sees it as her Christian duty to ease the unfortunate girl's plight. Author of 28 published novels, Evelyn Hood has had a variety of jobs, including being a journalist and a poultry farmer. She is now a full time writer, best known for her family sagas, set mainly in her home town of Paisley (Renfrewshire) and on the Clyde coast, where she now lives. Evelyn has also written several one-act stage plays, which are regularly performed all over the world, as well as short stories, pantomimes and children's musicals.
