  Set in Kent and Italy, this is the moving story of the lives of sisters Poppy and Isobel. 1918: WWI has just ended and the young sisters both fall in love with Kit, an injured airman - Poppy with an adolescent love, and Isobel with an adult love. Poppy is devastated when Kit and Isobel elope - Isobel is pregnant and they go to Italy. Italy 1928: Isobel, after ten years of silence, suddenly writes to Poppy asking her to come and visit - she needs help. Isobel had miscarried her first child and things in Italy hadn't come up to her naive and romanticised expectations - they had no money...However, Kit and Isobel now have a son, Robbie, and she is pregnant again - but depressed and miserable. The presence of a French woman, Eloise, seems strange to Poppy and is clearly the crux of Isobel's problems.
