  At the age of 62, the author - a sports journalist for 45 years - set off to climb to the highest peak of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, respectively - Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Corran Tuathail. Among his greatest pleasures were the characters he met on the way, including a young mountaineer who kept in trim by abseiling down oil-rigs to do repairs; a wild Irish giant; an Englishman who found love on Ben Nevis; a ratcatcher from Liverpool; a CID officer who nabbed mountains as a hobby; and Misty, Ben Nevis's resident spaniel. The trips are recounted in this book with a mixture of humour and observation, and the author's aim is to communicate the pleasures and rewards of walking in high places. But he also offers advice on the various aspects of hill-walking.
