The Last Days of Steam Around Darlington

The Last Days of Steam Around Darlington

by David Burdon (Author)

Synopsis

Steam locomotives disappeared from Darlington in 1966, when the loco works and shed were closed. This collection of photographs from the last decade of steam - focusing especially on the last three years - includes Darlington-based engines as well as main-line expresses and freights passing through. As steam's domination came to an end, and railway centres all over the country closed down, locos from other regions were repaired at the North Road works: this was busy right up to its last days, and David Burden was there with his camera. David's photographs, part of a collection of over 4000, are all informatively captioned. Anecdotes of his time as an apprentice at the North Road works are also included.
