Hitler's Women

Hitler's Women

by Guido Knopp (Author)

Synopsis

Guido Knopp turns the spotlight on the leading women of the Third Reich and the role they played in the Nazi regime. To illustrate this theme he has painted vivid pen portraits of six famous women who were all bound up with Hitler's regime: Eva Braun, Hitler's mistress; Magda Goebbels, wife of the Reich Propaganda Minister; Winifred Wagner, grand-daughter of composer Richard Wagner; Leni Riefenstahl, Nazi film director; Zarah Leander, Nazi film star; and the legendary screen goddess Marlene Dietrich. The lives of these women prove how the Nazis envisaged the future of German womanhood and how things looked in reality. Supported by previously unpublished photographs and the words of close friends and colleagues of those portrayed, Knopp brings back to life a generation who, with a few courageous exceptions, succumbed to enticement and violence.

Media Reviews
Subtitled 'Cousins, Rivals, Queens', Dunn's double biography gives an account of one of the crucial relationships of Tudor history: that between Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots. It's hardly an original subject, but Dunn makes it seem fresh by fluently combining attention to the personalities of her subjects with a convincing account of the political and religious complexities by which they were shaped - and which they shaped in turn. Dunn also pays particular attention to the gender of her subjects - reminding us of how they were women exercising power in a world shot through with limiting notions of femininity. The book moves inexorably and movingly towards the extraordinary finale, in which an agonised Elizabeth places her signature on Mary's death warrant. Readable, lavishly illustrated - and deservingly backed by a major promotional campaign. Consisting of six vivid portraits of his various consorts - including the actress Marlene Dietrich - Hitler's Women explains what role his women friends played in The F hrer's life and in the Third Reich. Knopp provides a fascinating insight - not only into Hitler's women, but into the mind and emotional make-up of the dictator himself. Very well researched and peppered with quotes from those close to Hitler and his various women, the book succeeds in being both scholarly and highly readable. You may get an idea of the way in which Hitler treated his women 'friends' when two of them have attempted suicide and one has succeeded by the end of the first chapter.
